Or Whitman. But definitely Auden.<\/p>\n<p>This is maybe the <del>best<\/del>\u00a0most true thing about grief that has ever been written. Oddly, maybe, I found my feelings about the US election results tonight reminded me, a bit, of my feelings of grief when my mum died. That feeling that the world has been lessened, immeasurably\u2014that a light has dimmed\u2014yet on the outside, everyone is acting as if things are normal.<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, it describes perfectly how I feel.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>W.H. Auden<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Stop all the clocks, cut off the telephone,<br \/>\nPrevent the dog from barking with a juicy bone,<br \/>\nSilence the pianos and with muffled drum<br \/>\nBring out the coffin, let the mourners come.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Let aeroplanes circle moaning overhead<br \/>\nScribbling on the sky the message He Is Dead,<br \/>\nPut crepe bows round the white necks of the public doves,<br \/>\nLet the traffic policemen wear black cotton gloves.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">He was my North, my South, my East and West,<br \/>\nMy working week and my Sunday rest,<br \/>\nMy noon, my midnight, my talk, my song;<br \/>\nI thought that love would last for ever: I was wrong.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">The stars are not wanted now: put out every one;<br \/>\nPack up the moon and dismantle the sun;<br \/>\nPour away the ocean and sweep up the wood.<br \/>\nFor nothing now can ever come to any good.<\/p>\n<p>Stop all the clocks.<\/p>\n<p>Stop.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>If I had a favourite poet, Auden would be it.
